New Product Hits & Misses
With over 50,000 products in the average supermarket, people don’t have the time, or the money, to test every product on the shelves and with 15,000 new products every year consumers need to know what’s out there!
So Phil does the testing and the tasting for you and gives the product a rating out of 100 so you know what you can expect when you try something new!
SupermarketGuru does not sell the foods we review, nor receive any compensation from the manufacturers for reviewing or rating them.
Phil taste-tests and judges each product based on the following 8 criteria:
1. (30 points) Taste: The most important attribute of any food
2. (20 points) Value: Is it worth it?
3. (15 points) Health: Based off the nutritional information, is it nutritionally balanced?
4. (15 points) Ingredients: What’s in it, how natural is it?
5. (5 points) Preparation: When applicable, how accurate or good are the directions *
6. (5 points) Appearance: Is it appetizing and does it resemble its photo or description
7. (5 points) Packaging: Is it appropriate for the product and does it have any benefits such as resealability, added freshness, better storage, etc.
8. (5 Points) Sustainability: Is the packaging biodegradable, is it wasteful, is the company endeavoring to offset their carbon footprint?
* products that do not have any preparation will have the full value of these points included in their total score

This product is a HIT! Typically I am not a fan of green tea I do not find it very flavorful or aromatic. So if you are like me you have got to try PeLi Teas Silver Needle Jasmine Green Tea. It is very expensive but the taste is well balanced and non-acidic – one of the best green teas I have ever tried and the other thing that I love is right on the front of the package it shows you the proper brewing temperature. Retails for $20 for 3 oz. PeLi Teas, LLC, Beverly Hills, CA 323 651 2282 http://www.peliteas.com
This product is a HIT! If you know anybody under 12 who has a wheat allergy this might just be one of the best presents you could give them. At first blush I was concerned that the Chili Mac Elbow Rice Pasta with a Mild Chili Chicken Sauce and Pinto Beans would not be very kid-friendly, but one taste convinced me otherwise. Just microwave right in the package for 60 seconds and the texture and flavor cook perfectly. My only complaint with this product is the nutritionals: 8 g of sugar, 50 g of carbs and 700 mg of sodium. Retails for $3.99 – $4.29
Allergy Friendly Foods, LLC, St Louis, MO 314 604 2210 http://www.allergaroo.com
This product is a MISS! If you were like me in college you probably wound up sitting in a bar late one night eating popcorn that someone had accidentally, or purposefully – you know who you are – spilled their beer over. Pub-Corn has actually made the process easier by developing a beer flavored popcorn! Now, if that does not sound appealing what about this there is actually no beer in the popcorn just sugar, starch, artificial flavors and medium chain triglycerides. So should you buy this? Not even as a bad joke! Retails for $3.49. Pub-Corn LLC, Columbia, MO 816 838 5296

This product is a HIT! When you first look at Lauras Wholesome Junk Food Lemon-Vanilla Bite-Lettes they might remind you of a Dunkin Doughnuts Munchkin but that is where any similarity ends. These taste great, are vegan and contain no artificial ingredients and are low sodium and low fat. Laura is actually an M.D., but pay that no mind it is her recipe that matters. These are really good do remember that just 2 of these are 120 calories, but they are worth it! Retails for about $6.75
Lauras Wholesome Junk Food®, Marina Del Rey
310 821 9409

I think I found a new trend remember the Munchkin shape that I showed you, well here it is again, but this time as a Giant Flamin Hot Cheeto! To me these look like nothing more than a choking hazard! If you can get past the size of this thing the flavor and texture are actually pretty good and it really does have a slow burn Sister company Lays old slogan was I betcha cant eat just one for these giant Cheetos I would say I betcha cant eat more than 5! This is for fun, so dont bother to look at the ingredients unless you love red 40 lake, yellow 6 lake, yellow 6 or yellow 5 artificial colors. Retails for $2.89 Frito-Lay, Inc., Plano, TX 800 352 4477 http://www.fritolay.com

Welcome To My Kitchen – Making Quinoa Milk Pt.2

November 9th, 2009 Linda 25 comments

Please join me in my kitchen as I prepare Quinoa milk for my little girl!

Some information on Quinoa:

Called a supergrain, quinoa is highly nutritious and can supply us with all of the body’s requirements: carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Quinoa is gluten free and considered an ideal food for those prone to food allergies. Common allergens include grains from the grass family such as corn and wheat. Quinoa, a leafy grain, is not in the grass family, making it beneficial for people who cannot tolerate common grains like wheat, corn, rye, barley, and oats.

Quinoa is considered to contain all the essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. According to the Alternative Field Crops Manual of the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension, “Quinoa is a highly nutritious food. The nutritional quality of this crop has been compared to that of dried whole milk by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The protein quality and quantity in quinoa seed is often superior to those of more common cereal grains.

Quinoa possesses larger quantities of calcium, fat, iron, phosphorus, and B vitamins than many other grains. One-half cup of cooked quinoa contains 15.5 mg of calcium, compared to 8.5 mg in the same quantity of cooked whole-wheat cereal. The protein content is a whopping 4.1g for that one-half cup of cooked quinoa. Potassium is impressively high with 159 mg. as is zinc with 1 mg. Other impressive figures include 1.38 mg of iron, and 59 mg. magnesium. In the category of fiber quinoa rates top scores with 2.6 grams for one-half cup cooked grain.

(***PLEASE NOTE:

The consistency of the quinoa milk is more like a watery porridge because I cook the grain before blending. It will not have the thin water like texture you get with soaking a grain before blending it. This is particularly why I make it only for the baby.)

Welcome To My Kitchen – Making Spelt Milk Pt.1

October 24th, 2009 Linda 25 comments

Please join me in my kitchen as I prepare Spelt milk for my family!

Some information on Spelt:

Spelt is an ancient grain that traces its heritage back long before many wheat hybrids. Many of its benefits come from the fact that it offers a broader spectrum of nutrients compared to many of its more inbred cousins in the wheat family. It can be used in many of the same ways as wheat including bread and pasta making. Spelt does not seem to cause sensitivities in many people who are intolerant of wheat.

Spelt is a wonderfully nutritious and ancient grain with a deep nutlike flavor, spelt is a cousin to wheat that is recently receiving renewed recognition. Spelt products can be found in your local health food store year-round.

Spelt’s uniqueness is also derived from its genetic makeup and nutrition profile. Spelt has high water solubility, so the nutrients are easily absorbed by the body. Spelt contains special carbohydrates which are an important factor in blood clotting and stimulating the body’s immune system. It is also a superb fiber resource and has large amounts of B-complex vitamins. Total protein content is from 10 to 25% greater than the common varieties of commercial wheat.

(***PLEASE NOTE:

There will be a naturally occurring separation that takes place once the milk is placed in the refrigerator. You will notice a tan to brownish water color on the top and a thick creamy white substance on the bottom. This is normal and doesn’t mean the milk is spoiling in anyway.)

We purchase our spelt products from the links below:
